Eating is one of life’s greatest daily pleasures. Everyone loves a tasty, nourishing treat, and meals are often the focal point of meaningful social gatherings. But certain factors might decrease your ability to enjoy food. For example, you might find that things taste different after you get dentures. Why might your prosthetic be affecting your sense of taste, and is there anything you can do about it? This blog post explains.
Why Do Dentures Affect Taste?
There are a number of reasons why food may taste different after you start wearing your prosthetic teeth:
- Full upper dentures cover the roof of your mouth, which can block taste buds located on the palate and reduce your ability to sense flavors.
- Dentures can sometimes trap food particles and bacteria, which can interfere with the way flavors reach your taste buds.
- If your dentures do not fit snugly, they may move around and make it harder to chew, which can impact how well you taste your food.
- Denture adhesives, used to keep your prosthetic in place, may have a slight taste of their own and can sometimes mask the flavors of your meals.
- Some people experience dry mouth with dentures, and since saliva helps carry taste molecules, less moisture can make foods seem bland.
Of course, even if there is nothing wrong with your dentures, you might notice changes in your sense of taste. This is a common physiological change among older adults.
Making Food Taste Better
While changes in taste are common for denture wearers, there are several simple steps you can take to bring back the joy of eating:
- Maintain a thorough oral hygiene routine. You should clean your dentures each night and rinse them after each meal.
- Add a little extra seasoning such as fresh herbs or a splash of citrus to enhance the taste of your meals.
- If you use denture adhesive, opt for a flavorless variety to prevent it from masking the taste of your food.
- Stay hydrated and consider sugar-free lozenges or mints to help stimulate saliva production if you experience dry mouth.
- Schedule regular dental checkups to make sure your dentures fit well and are not causing discomfort or further taste changes.
Additionally, keep in mind that it may be worth it to switch to implant dentures. They are anchored in the jawbone, so they maintain a secure fit without adhesive or frequent adjustments. They also do not cover the palate. Indeed, they are widely considered to be the next best thing to natural teeth!
Adjusting to dentures takes time, but it is possible to enjoy the flavors and textures of your favorite foods again! With a little patience and some easy adjustments, you may soon regain your mealtime pleasure.
