What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that replaces the root of a missing tooth. Implants can be placed in either the upper or lower jaw and serve as a strong foundation for a replacement tooth.
Thanks to titanium’s biocompatibility, the implant naturally fuses with the jawbone, creating a secure anchor for crowns, bridges, or dentures. Whether you're missing one tooth or several, dental implants offer a long-term solution. Many people who once relied on removable dentures or bridges find a dramatic improvement in comfort and chewing ability after receiving dental implants.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Procedure

A typical implant team includes a periodontist or oral and maxillofacial surgeon to place the implant posts, and a prosthodontist or general dentist to design and fit the replacement teeth or bridge. At our office, Dr. Devarshee Patel handles the entire process—from implant placement to designing and fitting your new teeth, as well as restoring damaged crowns—all in one convenient location.
That said, the dental implant process can often be categorized into four key steps:
- Initial Consultation – The first step of your dental implant journey is meeting with Dr. Patel for a consultation. During this appointment, she will examine your mouth to ensure that you’re in decent oral health and have the required jawbone density to support dental implant posts.
- Dental Implant Surgery – During this procedure, your mouth will be fully numbed, and the implants will be placed at precise angles and locations beneath the gumline, depending on your tooth loss. It normally takes around one hour to place a single dental implant.
- Osseointegration/Abutments – Your implant posts will need several months to fuse with your jaw tissue; this process is called osseointegration, and it’s the most important part of the healing process. Once this happens, you’ll return to receive your abutments, which are connector pieces that go on top of the implant posts.
- Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – Finally, once everything has healed up, a custom-made crown, bridge, or denture is attached to the abutments, restoring your smile with a secure, natural-looking result.
Bone Grafting for Dental Implants

In some cases, a patient may not have enough remaining jawbone tissue to healthily support dental implants—this is often the case after being without teeth for several years. Fortunately, bone grafting can help in these situations. This process involves using donated or reallocated bone tissue to reinforce areas of the jaw that are receiving dental implants, ensuring that you’re able to support the posts without issues.
The Benefits of Dental Implants

When both the tooth and its root are damaged, the most effective long-term solution is a dental implant paired with a ceramic crown. This combination looks, feels, and functions just like a natural tooth. But the benefits don’t stop there—dental implants offer numerous unique advantages to patients, including:
- They’re capable of lasting decades or a lifetime with proper care
- They’re able to prevent the jawbone deterioration that occurs following tooth loss
- They restore most of a patient’s original bite force
- They don’t require any specialized maintenance or cleaning products
Dental Implant FAQs
Is Old Age A Problem?
Some older patients worry that age might be a barrier to getting dental implants. In reality, overall health is a more important factor than age. If you're healthy enough to undergo a tooth extraction, chances are you're also a good candidate for dental implants. However, certain chronic health conditions may affect eligibility. Your dentist will carefully review your medical and dental history to determine if implants are the right option for you.
How Will Dental Implants Affect My Life?
Dental implant-supported teeth look, feel, and function just like natural teeth—allowing you to eat, drink, and smile with confidence.
