Have you recently started your Invisalign journey? Having your trays in might feel odd at first, but they will start to feel comfortable as you get used to them. That said, your speech with them might change initially. This is normal for a lot of people, but you might feel a bit embarrassed about it. The good news is that it’s temporary, so here’s more about why this happens and what you can do to fix it.
How Will Invisalign Change My Speech?
You will need to keep your aligners in for 22 hours every day. This allows them to put consistent pressure on your teeth to shift them into their desired places. They are thin, so they are much more comfortable than traditional braces, but they do take up a small amount of room in your mouth.
Your tongue will likely bump into them and give you a slight lisp while you get used to them. Your “s” and “z” sounds might come out as “th,” but again, this is only a temporary change!
What Can I Do to Get Back My Clear Speech?
It takes about two weeks to a month to get fully adjusted to your Invisalign. It varies per person, but there are some exercises and tips you can use to get back your clear speech sooner. Here are a few things to try out:
- Keep your trays in for the full 22-hour wear time. This will allow you to get through your transition period sooner compared to if you take them out often. You will also avoid delays by having them in as long as you are meant to.
- Record yourself reading aloud and listen back to it. This will let you catch anything you don’t say right and practice pronouncing them.
- Have a conversation with someone you trust. They can give you live feedback when something is said unclearly.
In the end, don’t forget to give yourself grace. Be patient with yourself, as many people have their speech change when starting Invisalign. You will soon get adjusted to your trays and have smooth sailing to the healthier bite you deserve.
